“After college, I started to work in a reputed hotel along the East coast of Mauritius. The job was a secure and stable one, but I felt something was lacking. I thus took a major risk and joined a kitesurfing school as assistant in Palmar. I was a novice in that field and the only positive thing was that my elder brother was already an instructor there.
I used to observe people practising and my brother used to teach me during break time. Also, as I was employed by the school, I didn’t have to pay any fee while learning. Otherwise this would have been impossible as the fees are really high. Day by day, I developed my skills. My brother guided me throughout and I am really grateful for his precious contribution.
All this is worth it, as taking your kite and board, smelling the sea and feeling the sky is an out of this world thrill.
However, as all good things come to an end, our contract with the school was unfairly terminated after some months. I became jobless and life was miserable. But I did not lose hope. I registered myself on the “International Kiteboarding Association” with my diploma and started applying to various schools around the world. The response was great and I ultimately chose Dubai where I got a job at Atlantis. I was lucky that they agreed to cover for everything from my air tickets to accommodation. Of course, initially it was tough as I couldn’t visit my family on a regular basis, the tickets being too expensive. I took time to adapt and stayed strong.
Today, I can say that this job has given me everything. I meet all kind of people every day. Teaching and practising kitesurfing is a unique experience. It is not an easy job to be an instructor and you may face many obstacles. You have to be patient, ready to deal with tiredness and sacrifice many things. All this is worth it, as taking your kite and board, smelling the sea and feeling the sky is an out of this world thrill.
I hail from a quite modest family in the village of Trou D’Eau Douce but I can say that kitesurfing has given me things that books wouldn’t have been able to. My future plan is to have my own house in Mauritius and enjoy every moment of my life. Also, if everything goes on well, why not open a nautical activities club one day in my Island to continue and share my passion.”
