“My life changed completely the day I saw a stray dog by the side of the road, whose wounds were completely infested with maggots. How could I turn a blind eye to this and continue my journey? I took the animal back home and did what was needed to treat it. The satisfaction that I got after that episode was so immense that it felt like a real achievement.

I had both a good academic education and a job, but my consciousness kept telling me to seek my passion and true calling, which seemed to lie elsewhere. It is from that moment that I started to help animals in distress, mainly stray dogs. I used to get them treated, sterilised and then file for adoption but very soon, I realised that my yard would not be spacious enough to accommodate all these vulnerable animals.

It is not always easy to do all these alone but yes, some people do help me when I need, so humanity still exists!

Paid shelters proved to be too costly and not many people were keen to adopt stray dogs. I had to find a solution. So I started to rent plots of land and built shelters for those helpless dogs.

I do find real happiness whenever I save animals in distress. I can see in their eyes that for them, I am a saviour and this gives me immense pride.

I must have saved and rehabilitated over 7500 dogs till today and as of now, I take care of around 150 dogs on a daily basis. I know each one of them perfectly as I keep proper records of them. I wake up at 4.00 am every day to live this passion of mine. It is not always easy to do all these alone but yes, some people do help me when I need, so humanity still exists!

My ultimate dream is that one day, an effective, efficient and humane solution is found to resolve the issue of stray dogs in Mauritius. Mass culling has never been and will never be the real effective solution. You must be thinking how can I say this? Well, even today, we have around 55000 to 60000 stray dogs in Mauritius…”
